For journalists
Writing about traffic in Amsterdam? This site measures every minute how long the drive takes on twelve busy routes, and how busy the roads in and around the city are. You are free to use the figures, charts and images. Please credit amsterdamverkeer.nl, preferably with a link.
Amsterdam right now
The current situation is not available right now. See the [map](/en).
The figures
- Per day and per hour: the stats page shows how busy it was, where traffic was jammed the longest and when it is usually busy.
- Everything per quarter of an hour: the travel times per route and the busyness on the roads, as a file for Excel.
- A report: on the stats page you can make a PDF with the figures so far.
- Something custom, such as one route over a month, or the rush hour before and after a closure? Just ask.
How it is measured
- Every minute we fetch the speed on each measured section of road. For each route we add those sections up into a travel time.
- Normal is the travel time when you can simply drive through, as at night.
- A section of road is busy when it takes at least 30 percent longer than normal, and jammed at 80 percent longer or more.
- Rush hour is from 7:00 to 9:30 and from 16:00 to 18:30.
- For short stretches there must also be at least half a minute (busy) or a full minute (jammed) extra.
- A bridge is open when the bridge reports it (only some bridges do) or when the schedule has an opening and traffic is waiting right next to the bridge. An opening from the schedule alone is not shown as open.
- Stored per quarter of an hour: travel time per route, how many roads are busy or jammed, and what else was going on (rain, wind, roadworks, bridges). Everything is available as CSV on the stats page, in Dutch time, free to use (CC BY 4.0).
- What the figures are not: a measurement tells what happened, not why. A difference between two periods is not proof that a measure caused it.
Changes to the measurements
- 5 November 2026: measuring in Amsterdam begins.
