Why is it so busy in Amsterdam?
Amsterdam is a busy city that is changing fast, and many roads and bridges are already busy. Below are the reasons, with what we measured ourselves this week.
The main reasons
- A lot of roadworks. Zuidasdok on the A10 South, major maintenance on the ring road and the main routes, and from mid-2027 the IJtunnel. Everything is listed on roadworks.
- Bridges and water. When a bridge is open for a boat, the traffic behind it stands still. The expected openings are listed per bridge on bridges. In the inner city the streets are narrow and canals and bridges are everywhere.
- The rush hour. In the morning and evening rush hour it is busiest on the A10, at the tunnels under the IJ and on the main routes to Schiphol and Southeast.
- New traffic policy. Most streets have a 30 km/h limit and the city centre is being adjusted step by step. The measurements show what that does to travel times.
- Holidays. During school holidays it is usually quieter.
